When I left my role at Headspace, I joked that my next step was to follow the well-trodden path of starting a podcast. After all, in today’s world, it seems like everyone has a podcast—yet no one seems to have the time to listen to them.
However, part of my motivation for venturing out on my own and starting a consulting business was recognizing the unrealized potential in the rapidly expanding field of Health Coaching. This industry's recent growth was at least some part driven by startups, and often appeared to be more competitive than collaborative. While many Health Coaches had their own podcasts, I struggled to find many that focused on the industry as a whole—its challenges, opportunities, and the people pushing it forward. This gap revealed a genuine need for a platform to highlight leaders in the field and foster collaboration.
It took just a month for that initial joke to become a reality. A couple of key moments solidified my decision:
First, I appeared on Virtual Sapiens Podcast – The Future of Work, where I spoke about the future of Health Coaching. The host, Rachel Cossar, introduced me to Zync.ai, a sleek and user-friendly platform for creating podcasts and other content. I mentioned the idea of starting my own podcast using the platform, and Rachel’s enthusiastic support was the push I needed. The prospect of launching a podcast had seemed daunting, but as I experimented with Zync.ai and asked Rachel questions, I was amazed at how straightforward it was to bring this idea to life.
Not long after, I had a coffee chat with my former boss, Dana Udall. I mentioned my idea of starting a podcast dedicated to the Health and Wellness Coaching industry, half-expecting her to respond with polite interest. Instead, she said, “DO IT.” In my memory, those words echo in the inspirational and iconic voice of Ben Stiller in Starsky and Hutch. (Sorry, Dana, if this isn’t how you remember it!)
Those two moments—Rachel’s encouragement and Dana’s unequivocal support—were all it took. With good timing and an outpouring of support, I knew I had to move forward.
As I carve out space for The Health and Wellness Coaching Podcast in a crowded market, I am committed to three guiding principles:
It’s not about me; it’s about the industry. This podcast aims to highlight the people and stories that are shaping Health and Wellness Coaching, providing valuable insights for both newcomers and veterans.
Collaboration over competition. In an industry that’s still growing, fostering connections and partnerships will yield more progress than rivalry.
Amplifying diverse voices. In a field historically lacking in diversity, it’s essential to provide a platform for a range of perspectives and experiences.
So, while the world may not need another podcast, I started The Health and Wellness Coaching Podcast. I’m excited to see where this journey takes me. With several episodes already recorded and released, I’ve gained invaluable lessons from my guests. My hope is to play a small but meaningful role in sparking new connections, inspiring impactful collaborations, and... well, who knows what else?
